Abstract: This work aims to synthesize and characterize silica xerogels and aerogels reinforced with nanocelluloses, in order to obtain improved mechanical properties for application in the aerospace area. The key properties for these applications are reduced contact angle, thermal conductivity and the achievement of monolith materials. The inorganic phase is derived of methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and tetramethylorthosilicate (TMOS) while the organic phase is composed by cellulose nanofibers (NFC). The synthesis of the hybrid materials is done using sol-gel technology in a single step. Several solvents were tested as well as the effect of one chemical additive, the surfactant SDS. In the end, the materials obtained were submitted to physical, chemical, mechanical and thermal characterization. With these characterizations it is intended to evaluate the improvement resulting from the incorporation of NFC at the level of flexibility and compressive strength. It is concluded that the hybridization of the silica aerogel with NFC generates monolithic materials whose mechanical properties are better than those of the corresponding silica aerogel without fibers. The hybrid was more flexible (E = 79.7 kPa) and has higher compressive strength (σmax = 208 kPa). The addition of SDS to the hybrid aerogel allowed to obtain a significant increase in flexibility (E = 53.2 kPa), however, the material is too weak under compressive forces (σmax = 21.1 kPa). Through SEM, it was possible to observe secondary silica particles of different sizes and shapes, which is a result of the addition of NFC that interfere with the gelation step. It should be noted that the SDS surfactant possibly led to a narrower distribution of particle sizes and a more closed network. The innovation of the present work consists in the incorporation of NFC in the form of aqueous gel. Thus, the results obtained are the result of an exploratory investigation of a new experimental procedure. These results add value to the state of the art in this area, exposing a new route of synthesis of silica and NFC hybrid materials.
A adição do surfactante SDS ao aerogel híbrido permitiu aumentar significativamente a flexibilidade (E = 53,2 kPa), no entanto reduziu a resistência a forças compressivas (σmax =21,1 kPa).
