Lubricating oils are products with many applications in everyday life, and have a key role in reducing friction and wear of machinery. During usage, these products undergo contaminations that lead to loss of their function, forcing them to be replaced. The generated waste lubricating oils are considered a hazardous waste, requiring proper treatment. Regeneration of waste oil is the most commonly treatment used for the recycling of this waste and is often accomplished through several technologies. This work is focused on the regeneration of waste lubricant oil by solvent extraction. The main objectives of the study were to evaluate the performance of two organic solvents, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and butanol, and study the behavoir of two waste lubricant oils with different physicochemical properties (class A and C). The influence of process variables such as potassium hydroxide (KOH) concentration and solvent/oil ratio on the yield, and percentage of sludge removal (PSR) were evaluated using the Box-Benken experiment design. The optimization of process conditions was performed using the obtained prediction models. By means of the Weighted Sum Method for Multiobjective Optimization, results showed that the optimum values are all very close to the maximum levels (solvent/oil ratio of 6: 1 and potassium hydroxide concentration of 3 g/L). The highest percentage of sludge removal of 11% was obtained for the class A oil using butanol. The highest yield was obtained with the oil class C for extraction with Methyl ethyl ketone, reaching 98.9%.Finally, in order to evaluate the quality of the regenerated oil, a physicochemical characterization was performed. The characteristics of the oil were improved after solvent extraction, with an increase in viscosity and a lower presence of contaminants.
