Sarcopenia, for the first time characterized in 1989 as the loss of muscle mass with age, it is now described as the loss of muscle mass plus the loss of muscle function (muscle strength and/or physical performance). For its growing prevalence and the costs associated in the geriatric hospitalized population, some studies have been developed about this topic. As it is a multifactorial pathology, there are several mechanisms involved in its physiopathology, as the protein metabolism imbalance and inflammatory, neuromuscular, endocrinological and environmental factors, such as the diminished nutritional support and physical inactivity. Some different organizations created diagnosis criteria for the diagnosis of sarcopenia. They differ in the diagnostic tests used to measure the skeletal muscle mass, the muscle strength and the physical performance and also in the cut-offs used.A suitable nutritional support and physical activity are essential for the treatment of the sarcopenic patients. There are less studies available about the prevalence of sarcopenia in the elderly hospitalized patients comparing to community dwelling older adults and older aldults living in6nursing homes. However, the prevalence is high and there is an association between sarcopenia and mortality and morbility in the elderly hospitalized patients in most of the studies. The disparity that exists between the studied populations, the diagnosis criteria and the diagnostic tests doesn’t make it possible to find sustained conclusions. It is imperative to create material and methods that can be applied to every future studies to make it possible.eng
