Introduction: The Patient-Centered Medicine (PCM) has been considered one of the cornerstones of the doctor-patient relationship. There is increasing evidence that PCM plays a key role in medical practice: it has positive implications for patients’ lives, particularly for their health. Enablement means the gain that the patient acquires after consultation, for understanding and managing their illness. Objectives: To measure Patient-Centered Medicine with PCM-PT and Enablement of the consultants with ICC/PEI, and verify if an PCM-based consultation corresponds to more enablement. Materials and Methods: We conducted an observational and multicenter study using a questionnaire with the two instruments (PCM-PT and PEI/ICC) to 251 consultants/individuals in USF Topázio and UCSF Fernão Magalhães. The sample was characterized by age, gender, daily medication and academic qualifications. Subsequently, we verified if there was correlation between these two instruments. Results: The sample is composed mostly of women, aged 65 years or over, who take daily medication, with academic degree equal or higher than the 12th grade. Concerning the PCM-PT, the most frequent answer to all questions was "Yes" and the most frequently question with that answer was "Accepted to do what was proposed". In the ICC / PEI, the predominantly chosen options were "Better/More" and the least chosen ones were "Much Better/Much More". The correlation between the two instruments was significant (p<0.01) and negative (-0,241). Discussion and Conclusion: The present study allowed the measurement of a Patient-Centered Medicine and Enablement in two different health units. We found a negative linear correlation between these two concepts. Comparing the results of the two units, we verified that USF Topázio consultants have higher levels of enablement, although in the MCP there were no significant differences between the units. More studies should be carried out with this subject, with more extensive samples and in other areas of Portugal.
