Background: Childhood obesity is an extremely important problem since it constitutes amajor risk factor for the development of chronic diseases that dominate the causes ofmortality and which have appeared at an earlier age. According to the Sociedade Portuguesade Pediatria (SPP), the second year of life is a very sensitive period of stimulation thatinfluences the adult life since the future food pattern is established at this period.Purpose: To characterize the eating habits of children in the second year of life, the influenceof parents' eating habits and the role of the family doctor in food counseling. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted through a questionnaireapplied to the parents of children in the second year of life, in Family Health Units andPersonalized Health Care Units of the Central Region. The data were analyzed using theSPSS® (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), software for windows, version 22.0.Results: The children included in the sample were described by the parents as being withinnormal weight for age. The mean time of breastfeeding of the sample was 4,7±50 months andonly 29,4% of the children continued to be breastfed. Complementary feeding began onaverage at 5,3±1,43 months and 97.1% of the children were integrated into the family diet. The frequency of fruit and vegetable consumption was in the majority of the children of 2-3servings daily, standing out 13,2% without daily consumption of vegetables. Theconsumption of fried foods was absent in 57,4% and foods with high dose of energy andsugars were low consumption. Correlations were found between the diet of parents and theirchildren in several variables studied. With the refusal of a given food by the children, only7.4% of the parents insisted on acceptance for more than 6 attempts. Counseling with familydoctor is valued and counseling existed in all attitudes questioned by most of the parents. Itwas found a relationship between counseling to the family doctor's parents and the age ofbeginning the complementary feeding of the children.Discussion and Conclusion: Attitudes strongly related to the increased risk of obesity (shortbreastfeeding period, beginning of complementary feeding early / late, low fruit and vegetableintake and increased protein supply) were observed despite the low consumption of highenergy foods. There were several associations between the feeding of the parents and thechildren and it was verified that the family doctor seems to have an impact and importance forthe parents. At the end of the second year of life the future food pattern seems to be set andchildren begin to reluctantly try new foods (neophobia), so the family doctor has a goldenopportunity to intervene in infant feeding, but also an opportunity to model the parents'nutrition in the face of what will be healthier for the children. Future studies in food andfamily integration are needed as well as the development of national recommendations forfood counseling at this stage.eng
