Arquitectas: superar a invisibilidade. Reconhecimento de Mercês Vieira e Desirée Pedro na Arquitectura Portuguesa.

Abstract

A invisibilidade das mulheres na arquitectura, nomeadamente, em Portugal é uma realidade que tem vindo a ser sustentada pela falta de conhecimento e reconhecimento público das arquitectas, e do trabalho que produzem. A arquitectura, historicamente, tem gerado um cenário profissional e académico muito centrado e dominado pelo género masculino. Aos arquitectos é atribuído todo o mérito e prestígio. Por essa razão, a presença e a contribuição das arquitectas têm ficado em segundo plano e, sobretudo, têm sido desvalorizadas. O objectivo da dissertação é dar voz ao tema das mulheres na arquitectura e, por sua vez, visibilidade às arquitectas, à sua história e ao seu trabalho, como forma de contribuir para a igualdade de género na profissão e para o enriquecimento da História das Arquitectas em Portugal. Em primeiro lugar, importa perceber a evolução e a dimensão da presença das mulheres na profissão e as dificuldades que encontram ao longo das suas carreiras. Em seguida, é pertinente dar a conhecer a experiência profissional das mesmas e, principalmente, demonstrar que são profissionais de grande qualidade e talento, independentemente do seu género. Para a concretização desta reflexão será feita uma análise ao percurso profissional de duas arquitectas, de gerações diferentes – Mercês Vieira e Desirée Pedro – de forma a contribuir para a sua visibilidade e reconhecimento na Arquitectura Portuguesa.

Women’s invisibility in architecture, namely in Portugal, is a reality supported by the lack of knowledge and public recognition of women architects and the work they produce. Architecture, historically, has generated a professional and academic field very centered and dominated by the masculine gender. Men Architects are given all merit and prestige. For this reason, the presence and contribution of women Architects have been falling behind and, above all, have been devalued. The aim of this dissertation is to give a voice to the theme of women in architecture and, in particular, to give visibility to women Architects, their history and their work, as a way of contributing to the gender equality in the profession and to enriching the History of women Architects in Portugal. Firstly, it is important to understand the evolution and dimension of women’s presence in the profession and the difficulties they find throughout their careers. Next, it is relevant to know their professional experience and, mainly, to show they are professionals of great quality and very talented, no matter their gender. For the concretization of this reflection, will be made an analysis to the professional career of two women Architects, from different generations – Mercês Vieira and Desirée Pedro – as a way of contributing to their visibility and recognition in Portuguese Architecture.
