Background: Obesity is a chronic multifactorial disease with physical, social and economic consequences. The prevention of risk factors commonly associated with this pathology should be a priority, through intervention plans and programs. At the global, national and regional levels it is possible to verify the existence of programs and recommendations in response to the prevention of obesity. In the Autonomous Region of the Azores in 2008, childhood obesity was registed at the highest level in the country and diseases of the circulatory system were the main cause of death. Indicators that led to the need to act on risk factors such as overweight and sedentary lifestyle. For an effective, sustainable and concerted action it is necessary to know the regional reality of the actions already applied and their effects. Objective: The mapping of community actions of prevention and combat in regards to obesity in the Autonomous Region of Azores, between 2004 and 2014.Methods: Development of a questionnaire sent to the 17 local Health Centers, to the 19 Chambers of Commerce and to the Regional Secretariat of Education and Culture. The results obtained were systematized by analyzing the characteristics of the projects / actions developed. Results: Between 2004 and 2014 37 actions of prevention and combat in regards to obesity were performed in the Autonomous Region of the Azores. These actions were mainly directed at children and youth groups (43%). A large proportion of the actions were carried out with partnerships (89%) but most lack results (68%), monitoring (51%) and sustainability (46%). Also, only 70% reported having considered evaluation. Conclusions: Obesity prevention actions have lack of concrete evidence of its efficacy, a consequence of the complexity of the disease itself. In the Autonomous Region of the Azores, the beginning of the awareness of the need for action is observed as it is possible to verify by the number of actions developed. However, more efforts are needed to create standardized, sustainable and structured projects to be equally applied throughout the region, with the sole purpose of prevention and combat in regards to obesity.
