Introduction Nanotechnology is a new and fast emerging field that involves the production and use of structures at the nano-scale (1 to 100 nanometres). Nanotechnology grows out of a number of scientific fields including chemistry, biology, physics, optics, and mechanics and is seen by many as the “next industrial revolution.” The imminent nanotechnology revolution promises dramatic advancements in science, technology, medicine and society as a whole. First generation products containing engineered nanoscale materials are already appearing in the marketplace, while more sophisticated products are being developed in laboratories around the world. Objectives Define what is meant by nanotechnologies; Summarize the current state of scientific knowledge about nanotechnologies; Identify the specific applications of the new technologies, in particular where nanotechnologies are already in use; Carry out a forward look to see how the nanotechnologies might be used in future; Identify what health and safety implications or uncertainties may arise from the use of the nanotechnologies, both current and future; Identify areas where additional regulation needs to be considered. Actual knowledge There are several exciting prospects for the application of engineered nanomaterials that include many different areas like the medicine, the engineering and too many others. Researchers and manufacturing employees are potentially exposed to dispersible nanoscale particulate matter via inhalation, ingestion and skin contact. Concerns over adverse and unanticipated effects on human health have also been raised. In fact, the same properties that make engineered nanomaterials attractive from a technological and biomedical perspective could also make these novel materials harmful to human health and the environment. Preliminary research indicates that in some cases nanoparticulate matter may be more toxic than other forms of the same or similar material. However, application of the classical tools of occupational medicine and industrial hygiene is hampered by the lack of consensus guidelines for medical monitoring, exposure assessment, and exposure control. Conclusion Over the next years, there will be a need to understand the toxicology of increasingly sophisticated materials that exhibit dynamic and multifaceted functionality. If the toxicology community is to meet the challenge of ensuring the safe use of this new generation of substances, it will need to move beyond ‘‘nano’’ toxicology and toward a new toxicology of sophisticated materials. We present a brief overview of the current state of the science on the toxicology of nanoscale materials
