Skin’s structural and functional differences, as well as the influence of cultural practices, produce variations in skin diseases and in their presentation. The appearance of cutaneous hyperpigmentation is the cause of frequent complaints, prompting a large segment of all dermatological medical appointments. These can be congenital, such as in the case of the different patterns of hereditary inheritance, or acquired, as a result of skin problems, systemic or secondary diseases or environmental influences. The great majority of hyperpigmentation cases are due to the fact that usually occur changes in the amount of melanin, induced by different mechanisms of action. This essay will focus on the main types of acquired hyperpigmentation, associated with the increase of melanin, will review their mechanisms of action and also their possible prevention and treatment procedures. A good understanding of the etiology and managing strategies of hyperpigmentation is very important, aiming not only treating people affected by this kind of problems, but also developing new therapies.
