Património com Futuro... Ou sobre a resiliência das cidades

Abstract

We live at a time of great tolerance towards the past. The inflation that both heritage and memory have been suffering is a consequence of this fact. However, it would be worth wondering if there is an urban heritage that we can pass on to the future. The author argues that there is something about heritage that has an element of the future, and often of the unexpected, that should be handed down to future generations. The only condition is to ensure that it doesn’t fall hostage to the action and the rectoric of the tourism industry’s nostalgia. This article goes on to conclude that this heritage of the future will reinforce the hybrid and cosmopolitan nature of the new urbanity, which will also be tolerant towards the past.

Vivemos um presente de grande tolerância perante o passado. A inflação patrimonialista e memorialista a que se assiste é disso melhor sinal. Contudo vale a pena perguntar se há um património urbano a transmitir ao futuro. O autor argumenta que há um sentido futurante, por vezes até um sentido inesperado, do património que deve ser passado às futuras gerações. A única condição é assegurar que não fique refém da ação e da retórica do mercado turístico da nostalgia. O texto conclui que este património do futuro há de reforçar o sentido híbrido e cosmopolita da nova urbanidade que há de revelar-se igualmente tolerante para com o seu passado.
