A prosthesis has a big importance in the day-to-day life of any amputee, especially the transfemural and the transtibial which make the individual able to move. The components of these systems are produced in order to adapt to the mobility level of the amputee. In this work one of these components is studied: the interface, most important to the comfort of the amputee, because it provides the contact between the residual limb and the prosthesis. The objective of this study is to verify if it is possible, using a composite with a matrice in silicone and the reinforcement in cork, to adjust the interface material mechanical properties, by changing the fraction and the granulometry of the reinforcements particles, in a way that allows the material to be adapted to the amputee mobility level. Furthermore, a study of the variation of the mechanical properties with the mass fraction of the matrice curing agent was performed. A new method to produce the composite with the cork particles dispersed uniformly in the samples volume was designed. Several tests were carried out in order to obtain the parameters that define this material mechanically: static (static compression and relaxation) and dynamic (cyclic compression and free vibration). A granulometric analysis was needed to determine the reinforcement volume fraction, as well as the equivalent diameters distribution of the two cork granulometries. In the free vibration test the oscillograph was used for the first time to obtain the mechanical properties of a material. Another objective of this work was to assess the suitability of this equipment for this purpose. The experimental procedure designed to produce the composite and the granulometry analysis technique were successful. One conclusion was that the particle size of the cork particles, within the tested range, has no influence in the composite mechanical properties. Another, in the static compression and relaxation tests, was the decrease of the rigidity with the increasing cork volume fraction. The dynamic tests did not allow to reach any conclusion regarding the effect of different cork fractions on the material viscoelasticity properties. In addition, a similar trend in all studies of the stiffness variation with the mass fraction of the matrice curing agent was detected.
