The purpose of this study is to characterize the mechanical behavior of transtibial and transfemoral prosthetic liners, as well as the interaction between the skin and texturized surfaces. Within this dissertation, three different materials applied in prosthetic liners, subject to three periods of aging, were studied. The chemical aging of these materials was carried out by soaking the samples in artificial sweat. This aging process allowed the characterization of the behavior of these materials over time and after static and dynamic compression. The static results show that, the liners under study, present typical behavior of viscoelastic materials, a first linear phase and a second stage of the curve non-linear. Through stress-strain curves obtained in the test and by the results analysis, theoretical models have been developed to simulate the behavior of these materials during a compression request. The collected data for the dynamic tests were initially approached through Kelvin- Voigt model and was subsequently verified that the damper behavior was only visible during the loading of the material. As such, a rheological model representing this behavior was developed. The friction tests performed on the forearm skin showed that the presence of depressions and projections decrease significantly the friction coefficient, when compared to the smooth surface. The results from the interaction between the forearm skin and the surfaces textures in the adhesion tests show that the larger the contact area between the skin and the material, the greater the adhesive force. That drops to the surface with depressions and is nonexistent in the projections surface due to the drastic decrease of the contact area.
