In the last years, the structural elements of steel and composite (steel – concrete), have been increased and more used in the global construction market. The preference for these structural elements are due to their characteristics such as attractive appearance, high loading capacity and the improved behavior in terms of seismic and fire. However, with the numerous accidents by fire, these structural elements when exposed to high temperatures and with restrained thermal elongation, have limitations and different behaviors that are not known yet and for that reason should be studied. Since there are few studies in real fire conditions, which means restrained to thermal elongation, during this thesis, an experimental study of tubular columns with circular sections and elliptical sections was made to understand their behavior when exposed to that situations. Therefore, various tests were done to see the fire resistance of each material. For the tests were used three different tubular elements, carbon steel, composite steel and reinforced concrete, and austenitic stainless steel, with circular and elliptical sections. All of these tubular elements with axial and rotational restraining to thermal elongation. The support conditions of these elements will be semi-rigid and pinned end. In these tests, the variations in some parameters such as the slenderness and the load level of the column were studied. The circular specimens have a diameter of 193.7 mm and 273 mm and the elliptical specimens 320 mm x 160 mm, with a wall thickness of 8 mm and 10 mm to the circular sections and 12.5 mm to the elliptical sections. With regard to the load level the columns will be tested with 30% and 50% of the design value of the buckling load at room temperature. In this research, it was concluded for the 3 elements studied, the stainless steel had the greater value of relative restraint axial force because of his low stiffness and the best fire resistance was noticed in composite steel and reinforced concrete. For this performance the interaction between steel and concrete, the materials conductivity and the greater stiffness had an important role. Comparing this experimental study with obtained by other authors, the restraint to thermal elongation lead to a reduction in the axial displacement of the tested columns. The results of this research allows the development of a numerical model at a later stage to establish a new simple calculation model.
