The National Museum of Fine Arts, predecessor of the National Museum of Ancient Art, since the date of its establishment (1884), intended to achieve the status of Grand National Museum. Its collections consisted essentially of goods from extinct religious houses, despite the donations that institution received. At the end of the 19th century, through the endowment of the Valmor Legacy, the museum found the chance to expand its collection. In this study, we seek to know, in a first phase, the beginning of the museological movement in Portugal and the progression of the National Museum of Fine Arts until its opening and later to analyse the fragilities of the institution between the years 1884 and 1911. In a second phase we aim to evaluate the way in which the institution managed and promoted its collections and managed the Valmor Legacy's funds for the acquisition of works of art.por
