Museu Nacional de Belas-Artes (1884-1911)

Abstract

O Museu Nacional de Belas-Artes, antecessor do Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, desde a data da sua fundação (1884), pretendia alcançar o estatuto de Grande Museu Nacional. As suas coleções eram constituídas essencialmente por bens provenientes das casas religiosas extintas, apesar das doações que instituição recebia. No final do século XIX, por via da dotação do Legado de Valmor, o museu encontrou ensejo de expandir o seu acervo. Neste estudo, pretendemos conhecer, numa primeira fase, o início do movimento museológico em Portugal e o percurso do Museu Nacional de Belas Artes até à sua abertura e, posteriormente analisar as fragilidades da instituição entre os anos 1884 e 1911. Numa segunda fase visamos avaliar a forma como a instituição geriu e promoveu as suas coleções e administrou as verbas do Legado Valmor para aquisição de obras de arte.

The National Museum of Fine Arts, predecessor of the National Museum of Ancient Art, since the date of its establishment (1884), intended to achieve the status of Grand National Museum. Its collections consisted essentially of goods from extinct religious houses, despite the donations that institution received. At the end of the 19th century, through the endowment of the Valmor Legacy, the museum found the chance to expand its collection. In this study, we seek to know, in a first phase, the beginning of the museological movement in Portugal and the progression of the National Museum of Fine Arts until its opening and later to analyse the fragilities of the institution between the years 1884 and 1911. In a second phase we aim to evaluate the way in which the institution managed and promoted its collections and managed the Valmor Legacy's funds for the acquisition of works of art.
