A Sé de Angra. Cabeça do bispado dos Açores

Abstract

A elevação de Angra a cabeça do recém-criado bispado das ilhas dos Açores em 1534, originou muitas transformações na ainda jovem urbe. A substituição da igreja matriz do Salvador pela nova Sé, construída a partir de 1570, é o aspeto mais evidente e materialmente mais relevante do processo, mas a obra da Sé e o processo de criação da diocese em si tiveram um alcance bem mais abrangente sobre a estrutura urbana e sobre o ordenamento do território, modificando-o e condicionando fortemente o seu desenvolvimento, numa sequência de eventos que impôs à vila a redefinição da sua imagem como capital eclesiástica.

In 1534 Angra was chosen to be the headquarters of the newly created Azorean dioceses, being the first settlement in the archipelago’s to obtain the city title in the same year. At that point, Angra became the archipelago’s «capital» and it’s image and materiality must transformed in order to expressed it. Through the study of the architectural plan and construction process of the new cathedral, this paper aims to discuss some facts about Angra’s urban plan history and morphologic evolution, besides presenting new data and interpretation on the architects and other agents responsible for Angra’s cathedral since 1534 until it was finished in early seventeen century.
