Abstract: Este relatório analisa duas abordagens pedagógicas a conteúdos matemáticos realizadas em sala de aula.
This report examines two pedagogical approaches to mathematical contents held in the classroom. The first approach, which aimed to overcome difficulties in basic arithmetic operations, the abacus was used as a calculator tool, which allowed interaction between students of the 5th and 11th grade. Under the supervision of a teacher, older students built the abacuses and collaborated with their younger colleagues, assisting them in addition and subtraction calculus with abacus, which allowed them to cooperate in the learning process. In a second approach, which aimed to relate mathematics to the visual arts, it was asked to the students of the 10th grade of the Visual Arts Study Course to do a research on pavements and afterwards to present their study and conclusions in the classroom. In the first part of this report, after the historical and theoretical framework for the use of the abacus in basic arithmetic operations, there are reported the practical activities developed by students, in the second part, after the theoretical framework, it is described the research conducted by students about tessellations and lastly the conclusions of this research are presented. This research shows that the use of methodologies directed to the interests of students and the student’s participation in the acquisition of knowledge provide an improvement on learning and the student’s achievement.
