Espaços de saber : a biblioteca e o seu processo evolutivo

Abstract

Esta dissertação tem como objectivo a análise crítica da evolução dos espaços de saber, desde que existe memória da linguagem, e da necessidade do homem gravar o pensamento, até à contemporaneidade. Propõe-se, pela análise crítica de exemplos, compreender a biblioteca de forma contextualizada e a sua relação com a sociedade, tecnologia, existentes na época. Procurou-se centrar a investigação sempre nas premissas do espaço, suporte, e actividades para o saber. Em primeiro lugar, dar-se-á importância a momentos em que a biblioteca representou uma mudança ou resultou na expressão de um motivo social, político ou científico na História. Num segundo momento, procurar-se-á apontar pela análise de exemplos, distintas possibilidades e significados que o espaço de biblioteca tem na sociedade contemporânea. Com estes dois momentos procura-se interpretar o papel do espaço de biblioteca, dos suportes e das actividades para o conhecimento na aquisição do saber contemporâneo. De modo a clarificar estas relações entre biblioteca, tempo e sociedade, a análise de casos de estudo reforça uma ideia de continuidade da arquitectura, e questiona o espaço e o significado da biblioteca contemporânea.

This essay aims to critically analyze the evolution of the spaces for knowledge, since there was memory of language, and the man’s need to imprint his thought, from early times to contemporaneity. It is therefore proposed, by the critical analysis of examples, to perceive the library in a contextualized way, and it’s relations with society, and existing technology. The research underwent through the assumptions of space, supports, and knowledge activities. In the first place, it will be emphasized moments in History where the library represented a shift or was itself the expression of a social, political or cientifical motif. Equally important, it will be pinpointed through contemporary examples the distinct possibilities and meanings that library spaces have in nowadays society. With these two moments, the role of the library spaces, supports, and activities for the current knowledge acquisition will be thoroughly clarified. Moreover, in order to portray the relation between library, time and society, the reasoning of examples enhances an idea of persistency in architecture, at the same time questioning meanings and space in contemporary library.
