Introduction: The Web is the privileged place for seeking information; thus, the idea of structuring a semantic web to enhance and leverage the retrieval of relevant information is essential. This work was developed out of the original idea presented by Paul Otlet of what could be considered an analogy of the semantic web, justifying the connection between the Semantic Web (SW) and the theoretical foundations of the Information Science (IS). Objectives: We aimed at examining and analysing the presence of the SW in the intellectual production derived from the IS master and PhD courses, in Portugal and Brazil, in the period from 2005 to 2015. Specifically, we aimed at identify i) courses that are active nowadays; ii) the number of master's dissertations (MD) and PhD thesis (PD) on IS associated with the SW in the period; iii) identify the points of confluence between the IS and the SW in these works; and (iv) characterize the academic profile of these works' advisors. Methodology: As a methodology, we performed a literature review a theoretical contextualization of the objects of research: SW and IS - and a case study focused on content analysis of the retrieved works in the repositories (RCAAP and OASISbr). Results: As results, we have identified 4 Master’s and 3 PhD courses in Portugal and 16 masters and 9 PhD courses in Brazil. We have retrieved no MD/PD in Portugal, 17 MD and 5 PD in Brazil. We have identified confluence points as the mutual contribution between the areas (62%), WS as an interdisciplinary theme (29%) and complementary knowledge (9%). Of the 20 advisors, 2 (10%) have training only in IS, 12 (60%) in IS and other areas, and 6 (30%) only in other areas. Conclusions: We concluded that the study does not reflect the interdisciplinary nature of SW as a joint work of IS / Computer Science (CS). It reinforces the idea that the SW is a field, in its own right, independent of the IS. SW is a construct that includes the Web of Data and the Web of Linked Data; and the IS is defined as the study of the mediation of the phenomena: data, information, knowledge and its consequences in the cultural field, a definition that is not consensual, and coexist with other conceptions mostly based in disciplinary relations of IS, particularly with CS in the knowledge organization domain.
