Relativamente à mediação, a II mostrou-se um mediador parcial da relação entre PSP e depressão, PE_Frost e depressão, PE_IMCP e ansiedade, PSP e AN, PE_Frost e AN, DA e AN e PE_IMCP e AN.
Introduction: Due to the consistent relationship between perfectionism and psychopathology, this trait is considered a transdiagnostic process. Several dimensions of perfectionism have been associated to worry and rumination. These two constructs are related and share characteristics as a process. Therefore they have been integrated in the broader concept of Perseverative Negative Thinking (PNT). This cognitive process is defined as a style of thinking about individual´s own problems or negative experiences, which is repetitive, intrusive, difficult to control and perceived as unproductive and as interfering with the mental capacity. PNT has also been considered a transdiagnostic phenomenon. Objectives: To study the relationship between perfectionism, PNT and psychological distress: (1) to analyse the pattern of relationships between dimensions of perfectionism and dimensions of PNT, (2) to test if the later are mediators of the relationship between perfectionism and psychological distress. Materials and Methods: 344 college students (68.4% girls, mean age 20.69 ± 1.586) completed the Hewitt & Flett and Frost´s Multidimensional Perfectionism Scales, the Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire, the Profile of Mood States, the Perceived Stress Scale and the Multidimensional Perfectionism Cognitions Inventory. Results: Both dimensions of PNT (Repetitive Thinking/RT and Unproductiveness and Interference /UI) were positively correlated with more negative outcomes (Depression, Stress, Anxiety and Negative Affect /NA) and inversely with the Positive Affect/PA; UI showed higher correlation coefficients. The mean scores of the negative and positive outcomes by perfectionism and PNT groups were significantly different; for UI groups the differences were again of higher magnitude. The highest correlations between PNT variables and perfectionism were observed with the dimensions: Socially Prescribed Perfectionism/SPP, Concern about 7 Mistakes/CM_Frost, Parental Expectations/PE_Frost, Concern about evaluation/ConcAv and Concern about Mistakes/CM_IMCP. Regression analysis showed that the PNT dimensions are significant predictors of the outcomes, even controlling for stress/social support perception and perfectionism. UI proved to be a partial mediator of the relationship between SPP and depression, CM_Frost and depression, CM_IMCP and anxiety, SPP and NA , and CM_Frost and NA, Doubts about actions/DA and NA and CM_IMCP and NA . The RT proved to be a partial mediator of the relationship between CM_IMCP and anxiety. The UI was a total mediator of the relationship between Self-Oriented Perfectinism/SOP and depression, Perfectionist Strengths/PerfSt and NA, SOPP and NA and CM_Frost and PA. Discussion: The PNT, particularly its more maladaptive dimension, UI, is a mediator of the relationship between perfectionism and psychological distress. Both perfectionism and PNT should be addressed as potential targets in the prevention and treatment of psychological disturbance.
