The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is defined as the sudden and unexpected death of an infant less than one year of age for which there is no proper explanation even after careful investigation of the circumstances of his death. This is a complex issue that has sparked interest and raised several questions among health professionals. The etiology of SIDS remains unknown. The most accepted among the various hypotheses designed to explain the physiopathology of these deaths is that they are caused by the dysfunction of the cardiorespiratory system associated with alterations of the mechanisms involved in arousal. Currently, there are several risk factors that have been identified, and it’s generally believed that this situation results from the interaction of several factors. The identification of the various risk and protective factors allowed the development of recommendations that seek to prevent SIDS. However, despite the efforts made towards the dissemination of these preventive measures, this syndrome remains the leading cause of post-neonatal death in many countries during the first year of life. This work presents a review of existing literature, addressing various aspects related to the subject of SIDS, including its definition, epidemiology, physiopathology, risk factors, protective factors and their preventive measures. A literature search was performed in selected publications of the last five years from PubMed medical sources and also from the Pediatrics and Portuguese Society of Pediatrics.
