Changes that spinal cord injury causes an individual with paraplegia, limiting in large-scale functional independence, both in terms of physical activity, such as the activities of daily living are visible. Given these consequences the paraplegic individual rejects the possibility of returning to physical activity, which may result in a situation of decline in their physical condition, negatively influencing their functional independence in performing activities of daily living (Scire, 2008). It is clear that the paraplegic individual, but with some limitations, can be very active with regard to the practice of sports activity. Obviously, it is necessary to take into account some recommendations and care, so you can benefit from all aspects that promotes physical activity. Since, due to limitations caused by the injury, individuals with paraplegia have to travel in a wheelchair, require additional effort of the trunk and upper limbs. Thus, all muscle groups of the regions of the body must be properly developed to support the load and effort required. Based on this problem, the main objective of the study focuses on evaluating the influence that the work of muscular strengthening of the muscle groups has functional independence of paraplegic individuals during the rehabilitation process. The sample consists of 4 males aged between 19 and 57 years, with spinal cord injury between T4 and T12 levels on admission at the Center for Medical Rehabilitation Centre Region - Rovisco Pais ( CMRRC -RP ) . The study consists in analyzing the effect of the work of building muscle ( 3-4 sets , 15-20 reps , intensity 40 % -70 % of 1 RM ) of the muscle groups of the trunk and upper limbs for 8 weeks , and the influence this has the functional independence of individuals , translated the scales used for this purpose ( FIM and SCIM n_FAC ) , as well as the power and speed of the upper limbs . For this purpose the sample was evaluated in two main stages, the initial and the final , where the initial and final values of 1 - Repetition Maximum ( 1RM ) of the major muscle groups, of the medicinal ball 4 kg and average speed achieved a 25 meter test were estimated. Based on the results obtained in the study , it appears that paraplegic individuals participating in a muscle building program on a regular and assiduous obtained gains in terms of muscle strength exercise for biceps ( 31.1 % ) , tricipete ( 99.8 % ) , chest ( 55.4 % ) , deltoid ( 45.2 % ) , trapeze ( 105.3 % ) , dorsal ( 57.6 % ) and posterior muscles ( 27.3 % ) . Also improvements in power (10.6%) and speed of the upper limbs (11.6% ) were observed . Regarding the functional independence which is reflected in the total scores of the scales and SCIM and MIF showed improvements of 40% and 63.9%. VII The work developed muscular strength in a muscle building program during his rehabilitation process promotes improvements in the strength gain with positive consequences in their functional independence level (higher scores on the scales ) .por
