Worldwide population is rapidly ageing and the diseases that frequently affect the elderly will see them prevalence rising. Dementia is one of the most important diseases of the elderly and it is estimated that 115 million people will suffer from it in 2050. Dementia is a chronic disease and it includes a large array of symptoms related to a decrease in memory, reasoning and communicative and executive abilities. Because of the loss of the mental capabilities referred, the caregivers of these patients have to have an active and continuous participation in the patients’ daily living. Solutions that assist and monitor the patients are a great help for him and the caregiver. Recent years’ technological innovations are a potential aid in this difficult job of assisting and monitoring the patient with dementia. We have identified areas (Language and Communication, Memory, Spatial Orientation, Safety and Surveillance and Vital Signs) in which new technologies help the most and we revised and compared devices and systems related to them. We have also discussed ethical issues related to this subject. In all of the studied areas, there are better and worst solutions, but we concluded that the majority of them help the caregiver, and mainly, the patient in his/hers every day tasks, turning him/her into a more autonomous, independent and sociable person and enhancing his/hers humour, well-being and quality of life. We also concluded that there is a great need of using these solutions regarding the environmental and personal context of every patient, remembering that he/she may have some difficulties related to his/her illness or because of the use of new technologies. As they are very recent, some of the technologies presented are prototypes and can’t be used in the actual clinical setting.
