The singularity of the Douro landscape is the result of a symbiosis between nature and man. Testimony to a cultural tradition, in the 20th century, the Alto Douro witnesses a “change of identity”, composed by the transformation of Pombalino1 Douro to Contemporary Douro. This change was substantiated, in 2001, with Alto Douro’s Landscape UNESCO World Heritage classification. It is the oldest regulated Winery Region in the world. This thesis intends to address the vineyard culture, focused on this Portuguese area recent development, being a subcategory of modern tourism, the Wine Tourism. Its main goal is to unify both wine and tourist interests, which have become a construction incorporating two dynamics: functional building and museum as one unity. It is intended to clarify what is this new tourism practice and the changes that arise in architecture and in the wine production farms. Wine Tourism will be addressed in its architectural expression, analyzing some case studies and confirming or invalidating the existence of Wine Tourism architecture in the Douro area. This investigation can be divided into three parts. The first is related to the wine´s historical framework in the Douro area; some crucial farms for the region´s growth will be enlighten, in order to explain the case studies that are addressed in the next chapter, and the concept of Wine Tourism in Wine Architectures. The second part aims to study and reflect the effects of the Wine Tourism´s architecture in three distinct works, within the High Douro Vineyard. At this point, we address the Warehouse for Storage and Ageing Wines of the Quinta do Portal designed by Arch. Álvaro Siza Vieira, the Quinta do Bonfim by Arch. Luís Loureiro; and the Adega Alves de Sousa by Arch. António Belém 1- Pombalino refers to the period in which Marques de Pombal was in charge of Portuguese Government, in the 18th century. Lima. It is crucial to expose which elements unite and/or set them apart, in order to verify its context as Wine´s Architectures of the 21st century. It will be questioned if there is a wine architecture. If it’s possible to find a pattern. Some concepts that fit these questions will be defined, by identifying the catalysts in the farm tourism of the 20th century. The morphological and technological evolution of the wineries on its suitability to Wine Tourism will be also emphasized. The patterns of change present in the wineries of the case studies are analyzed, such as its materiality, local connection and functional evolution. In the third and last part, we present a conclusive reflection of the practices of Wine Tourism included in Douro Wine.
