The present study is about a very significant event in the 20th Century History: The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The Spanish Civil War was not only a Spanish matter, it was also, and above all, a European one. As such, in the European consciousness, it was inserted not only as a presage of a war with larger proportions, but also as the inauguration of a new and fearful kind of war. The Spanish people was in fact the first one to suffer the consequences of a modern war, in which the civilians are also potential targets. The Spanish Civil War is known for being the last Romantic War, the world was very moved by it, and it awakened really great passions: 40.000 volunteers, from 53 different nations, joined the International Brigades, and fought in Spain against fascism. The Spanish Civil War is also commonly referred as the Intellectuals War: it inspired great romances, works of art, and iconic photographs. The most prestigious publications sent their very best professionals to cover the war. Hundreds of journalists or volunteers that at one point practice some similar role were in Spain during the conflict. Photojournalism, had made The Spanish Civil War in the very first "photogenic" war of history, showing shocking images of the events in Spain. It was also the first media war, because it was the first one in which the sound film was used. The Spanish Civil War is often pointed as a testing field for the Second World War, in one hand due to military matters, in the other hand due to publicity and communication strategy. This dissertation is structured in three different parts: the theoretical foundation of the dissertation is drawn in the first one; a brief historical contextualization of The Spanish Civil War is presented in the second part, and it also regards the war memory issue; last but not least, the third and last part concerns the study of journalism and social media in general, in the context of The Spanish Civil War, with special emphases to the Portuguese case, in terms of printing press and radio ones.
