Recursos Digitais em Livre Acesso na Universidade de Coimbra : Estudo Geral e Alma Mater

Abstract

A Universidade de Coimbra (UC) dispõe — nas suas várias bibliotecas, a começar na Biblioteca Geral (a mais antiga e maior delas todas) — de um conjunto enorme e notável de recursos bibliográficos resultantes da sua longa história e da sua vasta actividade, que tem vindo a disponibilizar ao longo do tempo. Recorrendo às tecnologias de informação que passaram a estar disponíveis, iniciou aquela Universidade, na primeira década deste século, uma nova abordagem na produção e disponibilização dos recursos de informação que resultou em maior exposição pública e, portanto, na valorização dos recursos existentes. Procurou-se, com a ajuda desses meios, ampliar à difusão pública a produção científica e pedagógica dos docentes, investigadores e estudantes da UC, à semelhança do que já faziam outras grandes universidades internacionais e nacionais no âmbito do chamado “Acesso Aberto”. A publicação em linha de trabalhos correntes produzidos na UC passou a ser efectuada em 2007 através do repositório Estudo Geral. Por outro lado e pouco depois, em 2010, começou a ganhar corpo uma biblioteca digital de fundo antigo, que permitiu expor universalmente algumas obras do património das bibliotecas da UC — a Alma Mater. Descrevemos aqui as iniciativas que tiveram lugar na UC para promover e disponibilizar tanto a produção mais recente da sua comunidade académica em acesso aberto como o valioso espólio antigo das suas bibliotecas, apresentando o crescimento e o estado actual daqueles dois repositórios digitais.

Within the University of Coimbra’s (UC) several libraries, particularly, the Biblioteca Geral [General Library]—its oldest and largest, the UC has made publically available an extensive and notable archive of bibliographic resources collected throughout its vast history and existence. Through the use of information technologies that are now available, the university took a new approach to the production and dissemination of its collections during the first decade of the twenty-first century. This measure resulted in greater public exposure and, therefore, increased the value of the library system’s existing resources. With the help of these new technologies, the university has sought to increase public access to the scientific and educational production of the UC’s faculty, researchers, and students. This effort is similar to the “open access” resources that other large national and international universities have been promoting. Online publication of currently produced research at the UC began in 2007 with the creation of the Estudo Geral repository. Soon after, in 2010, the digital special collections library, Alma Mater, began taking shape, making some of the UC’s rare and antique collections universally accessible. In this study, we describe the open access initiatives taking place at UC to advance and make available its academic community’s most recent production as well as its library’s valuable historical legacy, presenting the growth and current state of these two digital repositories.
