Background: Extramarital relationships are documented in the literature as the third marital problem most difficult to resolve in the context of therapy. Given the negative impact that the extradyadic involvement can have on individual well-being and on the relationship of the couple, the aims of this study were: (1) to assess the prevalence rates of face-to-face and online extradyadic behaviors (EDB); (2) to analyze the association between attachment to mother, father and mate and involvement in EDB, and (3) to examine the association between psychopathological symptoms and EDB, as well as if emotional distress mediates the association between attachment and the involvement in face-to-face and online EDB in different relational contexts (dating, marriage and cohabiting). Methods: The sample consisted of 558 participants (73.7% females) with a mean age of 30.64 years (SD = 10.72). The assessment protocol included sociodemographic data and questions related to the sexual, relational and familiar history, and the following self-report instruments: Extradyadic Behaviors Inventory, the Brief Symptom Inventory and the Experience in Close Relationships - Relationship Structures. Results: Most single (63.7%), married (52.2%) and cohabiting participants (65.4%) reported having already engaged in face-to-face EDB. In turn, 47.2% of single, 25.6% of married and 38.5% of cohabiting subjects reported to have at some point been involved in online EDB. Overall, there were no differences concerning the relational situation. With respect to the partner, significant positive associations with the dimensions of attachment anxiety and avoidance were observed, being stronger with the avoidance, in both face-to-face and online modalities. We have also found positive associations, among single and cohabiting participants, between avoidance to mother and anxiety to father and face-to-face EDB, and positive correlations, among singles, between anxiety and avoidance to the mother and online EDB. Those who stated having engaged in EDB reported higher anxiety and depressive symptoms. Depressive symptoms were not significantly associated with involvement in face-to-face EDB, contrary to anxiety and depression, which were positively associated in the online context, but only among single participants. Significant effects of attachment in the involvement on face-to-face and online EDB were found. The emotional distress did not mediate the association between dimensions of attachment and extradyadic involvement, and neither relational situation moderated significantly this association. Conclusions: These findings added new information in the context of prevalence of face-to-face and online EDB, in different relational contexts. They also provided relevant information about the attachment relationships to different figures and extradyadic involvement and revealed information about the association between attachment anxiety and avoidance and extradyadic involvement, particularly with psychopathological symptoms. Given these results, suggestions for future research are discussed.
