Several investigations show that hypnosis expectations (and beliefs /attitudes) about hypnosis as determinants of response to hypnotic suggestions. In particular, the positive expectations hypnosis constitute the major determinants, not only the occurrence of hypnotic response, but also, and in particular the change in sense therapy. However, recently, several studies and authors have called into question this perspective (Benham, Woody, Wilson, & Nash , 2006; Lifshitz, Howells, & Raz, 2012) , attributing to a much smaller role expectations as to the magnitude of the influence responsiveness hypnotic. Following this research and theoretical positions that joined our experience with the use of clinical hypnosis is our hypothesis that the hypnotic induction/hypnotic suggestions provoke surprise (for violation of expectations) and change in the psychological state of the person exercising interaction between both events, a direct influence on therapeutic change (and not the expectations , beliefs or attitudes). To conduct this study we employed the following instruments: PCI Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (Pekala, 2002 - Translation and validation of the Portuguese population Ludeña, in the present investigation), the CES-D (The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale) in Radloff (1977 adapted by Sparky & Gonçaves, 2000), Scale Zung self-rated anxiety (Zung, 1971 - Adaptation Vaz Serra et al. 1982), Scale assessment of surprise (Ludeña, 2010). In this investigation we used a clinical sample of 82 people with various emotional disorders (anxiety, depression). People completed the questionnaires related to anxiety and depression, and subsequently were exposed individually to a hypnotic experience in a clinical setting with therapeutic suggestions, without them knowing the nature of that experience. Immediately after the actual experience and completed the PCI assessment scale surprise. A week later, they returned to complete the questionnaires of anxiety and depression. The dependent variables in this study were therapeutic change and the subjective experience of hypnosis (phenomenology), and therapeutic change operationalized as the difference in anxiety and depression before and after the experience with hypnosis. The level of surprise and the state hipnoidal (PCI) were the independent variables. Both the analysis of variance as the hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed a significant influence on the level of surprising and hipnoidal state to change therapy. They also observed a significant and strong correlation between these same three variables. The results point to a different direction to the fundamental implication of the beliefs and expectations, highlighting a crucial role for the surprise and the hipnoidal state both for the subjective experience of hypnosis and for the therapeutic change.por
