Background: The research on extra-dyadic behaviors within the scope of dating relationships is recent and limited (McAnulty & Brineman, 2007). Studies have found high prevalence rates, particularly among men (e.g., Wiederman & Hurd, 1999), and more recently a higher attention has been given to the involvement on extra-dyadic behaviors though the Internet (online). The goal of the present study was to assess gender differences in reasons for previous infidelity, in prevalence rates and in sociodemographic, relational history and interpersonal correlates of offline and online EDB during dating. Methods: The sample consisted of 494 participants (156 men and 338 women) with an mean age of 23.38 years (SD = 3.41). Men dated, on average, for approximately 31 months and women for approximately 37 months. The assessment protocol consisted of a sheet of sociodemographic data and questions related to the sexual, relational and familiar history, and the self-report instruments: Extradyadic Behaviors Inventory and Global Measure of Relationship Satisfaction and Global Measure of Sexual Satisfaction. Results: An “opportunity that came up” was the most reported reason by men for infidelity and unhappiness with the relationship was the most referred reason by women. The majority of participants (63.5% of men and 56.5% of women) reported having already been involved in offline extra-dyadic behaviors and 46.2% of men and 39.3% of women have already been engaged in online extra-dyadic behaviors, and this difference was not statistically significant. Overall, having been unfaithful to a partner and lower relational satisfaction were important predictors of involvement in extra-dyadic behaviors. Specifically, for men, belonging to the Catholic religion and prior history of the father’s infidelity were significant predictors of the online extra-dyadic behaviors. Among women, the number of sexual partners in the last two years was significantly related with offline extra-dyadic behaviors. Conclusions: Although men and women are converging in terms of the reasons and rates of prevalence, the correlates of engagement in EDB differ according to gender. Overall, the socio-demographic variables were non-significant predictors of extra-dyadic behaviors; on the other hand, the variables related to interpersonal and relational history proved to be particularly important. Suggestions for future research are presented in the view of these findings. Keywords: extra-dyadic behaviours, gender differences, prevalence, dating relationships.
