The Small-sided games (SSGs) are a popular method for training in football. Given the importance of the subject, the research-based SSGs have been growing in recent years. In this sense, the purpose of this study was to assess the state of the art. Therefore, we use keywords in existing databases, to analyze the studies that have been conducted in relation to the matter. Our results prove that the SSGs have been growing exponentially, with 49% of articles being published in 2011 and 2012. The physiological parameters that have been evaluated the most relate to heart rate, blood lactate, perceived exertion. Some studies also make a complementary approach to the movement-time characteristics. Other variables relate to technical and tactical parameters. The studies use different methodologies and different samples (ie, different ages, different levels, etc.) We can conclude that there is a growing interest in the scientific community on the subject, demonstrating the popularity of SSGs in training and curiosity for their results. The demonstration is the increasing number of entries in the scientific databases, and this exponential growth.
