The study of the satisfaction with life, the self-esteem in physical domain in elderly populations in Portugal is really small, mainly in the comparison between active and sedentary elderly. Nowadays the number of elderly people that are practicing exercise is rising up, however is still low among the sedentary. This is really relevant if we take into account the numerous benefits that an active life style can have in the physiological, psychological and social levels. Taking into account the benefits that the psychological level has in the life quality of an elderly, it was our goal to do a research where it was evaluated the physical exercise in the elderly satisfaction with life, self-esteem and physical self-perception. We also intended to observe if the way that active elderly exercise themselves have some influence in the psychological components already described. The study is based in a sample composed by 164 individuals living in the district of Santarém, with ages between 65 and 83 years old, where 90 are females and 74 are males. From the sample total (N=164), half of the individuals are actives and the other half is sedentary. It is also important to say that from the 82 that are active, 39 have orientations during their practice of exercise given by a sports professional, and the other 43 have no kind of professional orientation. To evaluate the satisfaction with live were applied the following tests: Satisfaction With Life Scale from Pavot et al. (1998), the Self-Anchoring Rating Scale from Cantril (1965), used to evaluate the Genelar Satisfaction With Life and also in Moment, and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) from Cohen et al. (1983) to evaluate the Life Control. To evaluate the global Self-Esteem we applied the Portuguese version of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (1965), which was adapted by Ferreira (2001) from the Faculty of Sport Sciences and Physical Education from the University of Coimbra. On the other hand, to evaluate the self-perceptions in the physical domain, we used the Physical Self Perception Profile (PSPP) from Fox and Corbin (1990) – Portuguese version from Fonseca and Fox (2002) and Ferreira and Fox (2002, 2003 and 2004). After the statistical analysis the results showed that among males, and in all the psychological variables, the ones that practise physical activity in a regular way, the values are higher in comparison with the one that do not practice, however these differences have only statistical significance when we observe the satisfaction with life and the perceived stress. Now, regarding the results about females, the results showed that there are no significant statistical differences between active and sedentary elderly women. However, the satisfaction with live in the moment and the perceived stress, in the self-esteem and in the body function sub-domain, presents higher values. On the other hand, in the global satisfaction with life and in the body appeal and physical health self-perception, are the female elderly that have higher values. Is also important to say that the revision of the literature revealed that the practice of physical exercise plays an important role in the elderly physiological level of both sexes. About the influence that the way of practicing exercise has in the psychological level of the active elderly, the results showed that in all the psychological variables, the ones that have a regular practise of exercise in a formal way have higher values than the others that practise exercise in an informal way. Although, these differences are only significant concerning the perceived stress and in the body function sub-domain. In the way to finish, is still important to say that the revision of the literature also revealed that the formal practice of exercise have a positive influence in the elderly psychological level.
