This study examined the sport selection process, by applying a battery of tests to young players of the under-14 level, overlooking the distinction between elites (national players) and subgroups of non-elite (district-level players). The sample consisted of 76 male footballers (13.16-15.07years old), divided into two groups, named national group (n = 44) and local group (n = 32). Variables were related to the sporting experience, training volume, number of weekly training sessions, body mass, height, sitting height, body mass index and the sum of four subcutaneous folds, maturation (maturity offset), functional performance [agility, 10x5 meters, explosive strength of legs and jump with and without counter-movement), aerobic endurance (Yo-yo, level 1), and anaerobic capacity (7 sprints)], and also the specific motor skills of football (with ball agility and a pass to the wall). Variables were also considered from the application of two questionnaires TEOSQ and TACS, the first of psychological factors on the players, and the tactical aspects of the second game. Analysis of the data considered the statistics of central tendency and dispersion, as well as the student test to compare the two groups are using the discriminant function analysis to find a restricted set of variables able to reclassify players in the initial groups. The significance level was maintained at 5%. The young soccer players are evaluated between 2 and 8 years of practice in federated mode, and the national group that has more years of practice and more training sessions per week. With regard to external variables, morphology, national-level athletes are heavier and taller than the local athletes, the national-level soccer players are more advanced and have reached maturity PVC in stature, while the elements sample subset of the other district level are normomaturos and they’re still missing 0.61 ± 0.97 years to reach the PVC in stature. The young soccer players on the national level show that functional capabilities are more agile with better coordination, stronger, have more explosive power in the static jump, they are faster and have better anaerobic capacity. In the specific skills of soccer, we also found statistically significant differences between groups, and national soccer players, have more technical skills with the ball and are more agile. In proof of agility with the ball (M-test), national-level athletes were faster than the district level ones and, in the wall pass test, the district-level group had fewer passes than the other group of the sample, revealing less domain in control of the ball, the pass and receipt. In the questionnaire of motivation for the task or the ego (TEOSQ), it was found that both subgroups have a greater task orientation, being the superior values in the national group greater in the variable task as well as the variable ego, it’s assumed that in the last one the athletes have already reached a certain technical level, which leads them to begin to steer their motivations for the ego. For the variable of tactical skills and the results obtained from analysis of questionnaire TACS, in its four dimensions, we find that top-level athletes already have a domain more effectively of what should be their position in the field, have more safety notion and experience allowing them to make it more assertive, able to create more dynamic in the game because it’s interpretation of the action with the ball is held with more quick thinking of the game, making the transitions more effective, performing more effectively changes to the game and adapt quickly to these situations. The discriminated function used to identify the Ideal time Total time of test / sprints and proof-M test as markers that distinguish the best athletes at national level "elite" of the local level. The discriminated function correctly reclassified 97% of the sample, only one athlete at the district level in the national sub-group is reclassified. Considering all the data presented above, we conclude that the young soccer players who play in the national championship started to clearly distinguish from the athletes who play the same step, but in a lower league (district), in its countless variables under study, especially those at maturity, somatic, functional, technical and tactical level. These predictors of sports selection, suggest that in youth soccer is very important to consider the processes of maturation, because in spite of these athletes are developed more maturity than their peers and get more performance at this level, it is not clear that this extends the layers following, as the latest athletes can achieve maturity levels later athletes from other sports. So it's important to consider these factors in the selection of young talent.
