Abstract

A arte sacra cristã constitui uma categoria muito própria da produção artística, enquanto evidência material do Homem e da sua relação com o Sagrado, caracterizada quer pela temática e simbologia, quer pela peculiar aplicação ritual. Atendendo à importância do legado histórico e artístico eclesiástico no património cultural português, o presente estudo analisa as práticas museológicas em torno dos bens da Igreja Católica afectos ao culto e à devoção, nomeadamente a sua inclusão na esfera dos museus e a utilização em exposições, desde o início do período liberal, momento de afirmação do museu como instituição de utilidade pública, até à actualidade, marcada por uma crescente dinâmica neste domínio. Em termos estruturais, radica em dois objectivos distintos que se complementam num avanço convergente do histórico para o teórico e do geral para o particular, procurando compreender o fenómeno da museologia da arte sacra em Portugal através das suas dimensões permanente e temporária. Num âmbito histórico, traça-se a evolução da museologia da arte sacra, a partir do inventário e estudo dos museus e das exposições temporárias, determinando os momentos-chave e a sua relação com a História do País, da Igreja e da Museologia, de um modo geral, considerando não apenas o processo expositivo mas também as restantes funções museológicas que se coligem da definição internacional de museu, bem como as outorgadas especificamente aos museus desta tipologia. Em concreto, examinam- -se as motivações e a relação entre as exposições temporárias, as permanentes e as acções desenvolvidas no âmbito da salvaguarda dos bens culturais da Igreja e suas inter- -influências. Dentro de um plano mais teórico, analisa-se a relação da arte sacra com a disciplina museológica, ponderando o termo de uma função ritual e devocional e o início de uma nova existência como objecto museológico pleno, e o que ocorre quando a entidade musealizadora é a própria Igreja.

Christian sacred art establishes a distinct category in the realm of artistic production, as a material evidence of Man and its relation with the Sacred, characterized not only by its thematic and symbology, but also by its peculiar ritual application. Attending to the historical and artistic value of the ecclesiastic legacy in the Portuguese cultural heritage, this study analyses the museological practices around the goods of the Catholic Church affected to the cult and the devotion, especially its inclusion in the sphere of the museums and its use in exhibitions, since the beginning of the liberal period, affirmation moment of the museum as a public utility institution, until the present, marked by an increasing dynamics in this domain. In structural terms, it settles on two distinct goals that complement each other in a convergent progression from the historical to the theoretical and from the general to the individual, looking to understand the sacred art museological phenomena in Portugal through its permanent and temporary dimensions. In a historical scope, the evolution of the sacred art museology it’s traced from the inventory and study of the museums and temporary exhibitions, setting forth the key-moments and its relation with the Country, Church and Museology History, in general, regarding not only the exhibitional process but also the remaining museological functions collected from the international definition of museum, as well as the ones specifically granted to this kind of museums. In particular, the motivations and the relation between the temporary and permanent exhibitions and the actions developed on the safeguard of the cultural goods of the Church and its inter-influences are examined. Inside of a more theoretical plan, the relation between sacred art and the museological disciplines, considering the term of a ritual and devotional function and the beginning of a new full existence as museological object, and what happens when the Church itself is the musealizer entity.
