This research examines the narratives of young adults on their experience of institutionalization in their childhood and /or adolescent years and their perception about the influence this experience exerted on their outcome and current living conditions. For this effect a sample of fifteen individuals who experienced long term foster care under the protection of child welfare services were taken into consideration. Although some work has been done, in Portugal, on the subject, there is still a lack of research around this issue, including studies based on narratives of the subjects themselves and a look on the perceptions and meanings that they attach to their experience of institutionalization and possible impact of this experience in their quality of life and present well-being, thus reinforcing the need for this study. In the broad topic of institutional shelter, the perspective on quality of life and welfare of young-adults was one that aroused the most interest. It was important to identify how the subjects developed their institutional experience and understand the impact it had on the outcomes of their lives. It would help not only to understand the meaning and role long-term shelter played in their lives, but it would also help identify other influential factors related with the institutional experience, including aspects related to the individual, their significant others (birth family, new family, friends), the institution, school , work and other formal networks of support. The investigation started with a script of a semi-structured interview around the central issues of the study. The option for this format of interview results from an adaptation to the subject of study. During the interview, four distinct stages of the path of the subjects were covered: the period prior to institutionalization, the period of institutionalization, the transition period and the current period. The investigation followed a qualitative methodology and the interviews were analyzed through content analysis. The results show that despite the fragilities, contraptions and limitations of life in an institution, this experience played a key role in the subjects’ personal and social development, having a positive influence on their current living conditions. The role of this social response seems to assume protective or risk influences on children and on youth according to a variety of features that are related to the characteristics of the individual, birth family, the conditions of shelter, informal networks of support and post-institutional support services etc.por
