dc.description.abstract | The solar radiation that reaches Planet Earth every day, namely ultraviolet radiation, takes responsibility over multiple effects on the organisms of living beings and, although Sun is fundamental for life, as we know it, several of these effects can produce harmful consequences both in the short term as well as on the long term. However, these harmful effects can be minimized, as during exposure to ultraviolet light, living beings can adopt protective measures which include, among other, the use of sunscreen protection. Sunscreens are considered cosmetic products made up of chemical and physical UV filters. The main purpose of these two compounds, despite a few differences, is the protection of the biggest human organ - the skin. However, while protecting the skin, these effects are not innocuous, causing damage to Nature, mostly to oceans. These molecules have already been detected in the Environment, including in Humans and other living beings. This said, in recent years, the scientific community and the industry have been investigating new natural and ecological alternatives using plant extracts and metabolites as the main research source. Several researches and scientific reports point out that these compounds are promising, presenting not only photoprotection and sun protection factor but also other synergistic capacities that can complement this photoprotective activity. Despite the need for further and extensive research, in the coming years, new natural, safe and biocompatible sunscreens will probably be approved, representing a new generation of these compounds. | eng |
