dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the evolution of the relation between book and taxable income, in legal and statistical terms, in Portugal and Spain. We will focus on themes like depreciations, impairments and provisions. Our aim is to answer the following research questions: Is there a proximity between the legislative norms in Portugal and Spain in the corporate tax area on themes like depreciations, impairments and provisions? Does this relation have an impact in quantitative terms? Among the purposes of taxation is the simplification and efficiency of a tax system. In order to reduce tax complexity, the intention was to approximate accounting and tax rules. However, the principles that govern both areas, since accounting tries to present a true and adequate image of organizations, and the tax administration aims to protect and stabilize fiscal revenues, have accentuated their differences. In particular, in topics like depreciations, impairments and provisions, when subjectivism has a significant role. With this study we found that taxation and accounting follow quite divergent rules in Portugal and Spain, mainly in issues that imply greater subjectivity. We also concluded that these differences are quantitatively important, causing, to a large extent, adjustments in the accounting income. Finally it is important to note that not only in Portugal or in Spain, but also internationally, the taxable base of legal persons has been diverging from their accounting income. | eng |
