This research aimed to develop a study that allowed the identification and analysis of different approaches and perceptions about the theory of three ages, in order to understand how its theoretical-conceptual development is characterized by archival literature, how this model has become a reference for the management of archives and how it is currently perceived in different archival contexts. It is characterized as a basic research, whose method is identified as phenomenological. From the approach, to fulfill the objectives, it is characterized as qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and explanatory in nature, having as main resources the documentary and bibliographic sources produced by authors and institutions, in their theoretical constructions and in the development of institutional practices. Data analysis was performed based on content analysis, which allowed the identification and understanding of the phenomenon as outlined in the literature. The elaboration of the research fulfilled the development of three parallel axes, whose construction made it possible: to identify the path followed by the theory of the three ages of archives; to map the different perceptions, in institutional and academic productions that address the theory of the three ages; to confront the different perceptions about the theory of the three ages, in view of the new proposals and demands for the management of files. The first objective intended to build, in an evolutionary perspective, a map on the evidences of adoption of the theory of three ages, in countries of North America, Europe and South America. With the analysis, it was possible to see that the theory of three ages did not emerged in the same environment and context as document management, in the American government administration. The division of archives into current, intermediate and permanent phases has its first indications in the division between records and archives, a result of the French revolutionary period, in the 18th century, with the creation of a new archival model, the French National Archives. Eleven years later, Italian archival legislation provides normative guidance for the use of an intermediate stage between the current and permanent archives, designated as deposit files. The second objective was to identify the types of approaches to the adoption of the three ages in archival literature. Such survey verified that the theory of the three ages was absorbed by different archival contexts, a fact that is reflected in the technical and scientific literature analyzed. It also identified that the use is part of archival practices, but with different terms for its designation, showing its constant association as synonym of the life cycle model of documents. Such model, as indicated by the literature, emerged from the same environment and context of the North American document management. The third objective, finally, was dedicated to examine the different designations used to characterize the three ages of the files, from the analysis of the terms theory, notion, model and method, to then confront the different perceptions and associations between theory of the three ages and life cycle of documents, then confronted with the records continuum model, indicated in the literature as an alternative to the document life cycle model. It is concluded, therefore, that the division between current, intermediate and permanent archives is strongly present in the analyzed archival literature and does not have its emergence associated with the concept of documents management. Despite having assumed its terminological designation as theory of the three ages, in the second half of the 20th century, it has its first evidence in the late 19th century and is registered in the 1928 manual by Eugenio Casanova. However, the intermediate stage only gained repercussion in the theoretical reflections and archival practices, based on North American proposals, aimed at controlling the large volume of documents produced in the interwar period. It was also evident that the theory of the three ages and the life cycle of documents, although they are complementary elements, have different objectives. While the document lifecycle works as a theoretical model that offers a logical sequence of phases to guide the application of specific document management procedures, the three-age theory works as an operational framework for archive separation, based on of the evaluation process and aims to distribute archival documents in different stages of treatment and storage.
