Title: Elements of Probability Calculus
Authors: Amorim, Diogo Pacheco d'
Abstract: Editors’ Foreword: In 1914, one year after graduating in Mathematics, Diogo Pacheco d’ Amorim submitted his doctoral thesis Elements of Probability Calculus to the University of Coimbra. In the author’s Preface it is said that “the title—An Essay Towards Rationalizing Probability Calculus—would perhaps be more appropriate”.
In fact, Pacheco d’ Amorim’s endeavour seems to be an attempt to build axiomatic Probability Theory, as requested by Hilbert in his seminal address to the Paris 1900 International Congress of Mathematicians, avoiding embarrassing paradoxes, as exposed in Bertrand’s Calcul des Probabilit´es.
To fulfill this task, he first defines the standard model: someone performs the selection of an element from a sample space which is qualitatively and quantitatively known (for instance, extraction of one ball from one urn where n1 balls of colour C1 ,. . . , nr balls of colour Cr have been thoroughly mixed). This individual knows whether his extraction has been random or not (i.e., in the above example, whether any ball in the urn has or hasn’t the same chance of being selected). Thus, in this standard model,
contrarily to Poincar´e’s opinion, the concept of randomly selecting an element from the sample space has
a clear meaning for the one performing the extraction, which can be used as a “primitive” concept in
the construction of probability. This leads to the concept of equipossibility.
The consideration of chains of hierarchically dependent extractions is then used to build up a wise
and elegant solution to the main problem of constructing stochastic models in which elementary events
are no longer equiprobable. For Pacheco d’Amorim probability is always conditional probability, and in
some aspects is construction anticipates R´enyi’s work on the foundations of Probability.
In 1909, Borel had published a remarkable paper on continuous probability, that surely influenced
Pacheco d’Amorim’s construction of “randomly throwing geometric objects” in continuous sample spaces.
In chapter III of his thesis, he gives a solution to one of the celebrated Bertrand’s paradoxes (a solution
that in our view has a serious flaw, cf. the editorial note (13)), and in chapter IV the discussion of
“image points” — an ingenious construction of the probability measures of functions of random variables,
lacking the concepts of random variables and of distribution functions — effectively solves another class
of Bertrand’s paradoxes, namely questions arising from using equiprobability models both for choosing a
number in [0, 100] and in [0 2 , 100 2].
Pacheco d’Amorim’s believed that he had solved Bertrand’s paradoxes in the standard model, in
which the subject performing the extraction knows whether this was or wasn’t done at random. His next
step is an anticipation of pseudo-randomness: he deduces Bernoulli’s and de Moivre’s limit results, and
from them he judges whether or not a (long enough) sequence of trials performed by someone else, or
even by a mechanical device, imitates closely randomness. In the wealth of ideas discussed in the closing
chapter, the main ideas of significance and hypothesis testing are clearly shaped.
Pacheco d’Amorim thesis is not a mature work, and there are some blunders in the text, that we
discuss or at least unveil at the appropriate places. The long and cumbersome discussion of “random
figures” is the weak point of this thesis, and we have been unable to understand clearly what the author
meant in the last section of Chapter III (if you think that our translation is difficult to understand, you
are right: we couldn’t agree on the original’s meaning). But, on the other hand, it has many strong points,
it anticipates some influential ideas in Probability and Statistics, and surely deserves a fair opportunity
to have international recognition.
In this translation, we corrected obvious typos (and we hope we didn’t introduce other typos); figures
have been redrawn, and we adopted symbols that, in our view, improve the readability of the text.
We are thankful to Prof. José Pacheco d’Amorim, who authorized this edited translation of his father’s thesis.

Title: Symplectic keys and Demazure atoms in type C
Authors: Santos, João Miguel Magalhães dos
Abstract: The type C Kashiwara-Nakashima tableaux, a variation of De Concini tableaux, provide a combinatorial model for crystals associated to finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the symplectic Lie algebra. Some of these tableaux, called key tableaux, yield a tableau criterion for the Bruhat order on the hyperoctahedral group, the type C Weyl group, and a tableau criterion for the Bruhat order induced on the left cosets defined by parabolic subgroups of the hyperoctahedral group. In the type A crystal of semistandard Young tableaux, using the jeu de taquin, Lascoux-Schützenberger presented an algorithm to compute type A right and left key maps, that return key tableaux, for semistandard Young tableaux. Using the Sheats-Lecouvey symplectic jeu de taquin, we adapt Lascoux-Schutzenberger's algorithm in order to be able to compute right and left keys for type C Kashiwara-Nakashima tableaux. In fact, we can compute symplectic keys, right or left, without the use of the jeu de taquin and, motivated by Willis' direct way of computing right and left keys of semistandard Young tableaux, we also give a way of computing symplectic, right or left, keys without the use of jeu de taquin. In type C, the symplectic right and left key maps give a description of Demazure atoms and opposite Demazure atoms, respectively, and consequently of Demazure and opposite Demazure characters. The symplectic right and left key maps, and consequently Demazure atoms and opposite Demazure atoms, are related through the Lusztig involution.

Title: A semidefinite approach to algebraic optimization
Authors: Bostanabad, Mina Saee
Abstract: Conic optimization is one of the most important and thriving research areas in the optimization field
and it has a closed connection with polynomial optimization through semidefinite programming. In
fact, it is known that global nonnegativity of a polynomial can be checked using sums of squares and
this amounts to solving a semidefinite program. However, semidefinite programming is expensive for
large-scale problems. Several attempts have been done in literature to inner approximate the positive
semidefinite cone by replacing the psd condition with conditions that are cheaper but still effective
in practice. In this thesis, we give some certificates for nonnegativity of polynomials using bounded
factor width matrices since the cones of matrices of bounded factor width give a hierarchy of inner
approximations to the PSD cone. The concept of factor width for a positive semidefinite matrix has
been introduced recently and very few works have been done in this area, with the most relevant being
an exploration on the cone of factor width two matrices as an inner approximation for SOS problems,
by Ahmadi and Majumdar, the so called SDSOS. We will prove new results for matrices with bounded
factor width and use them to derive new results on the existence of certificates of nonnegativity of
polynomials.
We also propose the use of the cone of nonnegative factor width two matrices as a natural inner
approximation for the completely positive cone. Using projections of this cone we derive new
graph-based second-order cone approximation schemes for completely positive programming. This
approach is a compromise between the expressive power of existing SDP and speed of LP based inner
approximations. We also present numerical results on random problems and the stable set problem to

Title: A study of localic subspaces, separation, and variants of normality and their duals
Authors: Torres, Igor Arrieta
As in classical topology, in localic topology one often needs to restrict to locales satisfying a certain degree of separation. In fact, the study of separation in the category of locales constitutes a non-trivial and important piece of the theory. For instance, it is sometimes impossible to give an exact counterpart of a classical axiom, while other times a single property for spaces yields multiple non-equivalent localic versions.
The main goal of this thesis is to investigate several classes of separated locales and their connections with different classes of sublocales, that is, the regular subobjects in the category of locales.
In particular, we introduce a new diagonal separation and show that it is, in a certain sense, dual to Isbell’s (strong) Hausdorff property. The duality between suplattices and preframes, and that between normality and extremal disconnectedness, turn out to be of special interest in this context.
Regarding higher separation, we introduce cardinal generalizations of normality and their duals (e.g., properties concerning extensions of disjoint families of cozero elements), and give characterizations via suitable insertion or extension results.
The lower separation property known as the TD-axiom, also plays an important role in the thesis. Namely, we investigate the TD-duality between the category of TD-spaces and a certain (non-full) subcategory of the category of locales, identifying the regular subobjects in the localic side, and provide several applications in point-free topology.; Tal y como ocurre en topología clásica, en topología locálica frecuentemente uno tiene que restringir su atención a locales que cumplen cierto grado de separación.
Izan ere, banantzearen azterketa lokaleen kategorian aspektu ez-tribiala eta garrantzitsua da. Honela, batzuetan ezinezkoa da axioma klasiko baten analogo zehatza ematea eta beste batzuetan propietate bakar batek hainbat bertsio lokaliko ez-baliokide izan ditzake.
Tesi honen helburu nagusia zenbait lokale bananduren klase ikertzea da, eta horien erlazioak aztertzea azpilokaleen klase desberdinekin, azken hauek lokaleen kategoriako azpiobjektu erregularak direlarik.
Besteak beste, diagonal erako banantze mota berri bat aurkeztuko dugu, eta frogatuko dugu, neurri batean, Isbell-en Hausdorff axioma gogorraren duala dela. Testuinguru honetan, interes berezikoak dira erretikulu osoen eta aurremarkoen arteko dualtasuna, baita normaltasunaren eta muturreko ez-konexutasunaren artekoa ere.
Banantze-propietate gogorrenei dagokienez, normaltasunaren orokortze kardinalak eta beraien dualak aztertuko ditugu (esate baterako, kozero familia disjuntuen hedatze- propietateak), eta hedatze- edo txertatze-teoremen bidez hauen karakterizazioak emango ditugu.
Banantze-propietate ahulei, eta bereziki TD-axiomari, ere arreta jarriko diegu. Esaterako, TD-espazio topologikoen kategoriaren eta lokaleen kategoriaren azpikategoria (ez-oso) jakin baten arteko TD-dualtasuna ikertuko dugu, bide batez lokaleen azpikategoria horretako azpiobjektu erregularrak identifikatuz, eta hainbat aplikazio aztertuko ditugu punturik gabeko topologian.
