Title: Mulheres contratadoras de rendas, bens e serviços na Idade Moderna/Women Contractors of rents, goods and services in the Early Modern Age
Authors: Lopes, Maria Antónia
Abstract: (Português abaixo) This study looked at women in their contractual relations with a Town Hall and a University during the Early Modern Age – a purpose which I believe is being attempted for the first time. After clarifying the legal rights and restrictions of Portuguese women at the time, we looked at notarial contracts signed by these institutions based in Coimbra. It was found that all types of municipal and university revenue were partially financed by women's work, and they also acted in the sphere of municipal government as auctioneers and administrators of municipal rents, bidders for the supply of goods and services to the city (with and without a monopoly) and inspectors of market sales. The University administration also benefited from their work in rent collection and in monitoring the sales at its own privileged fair. Given that Coimbra could not be a unique case, it follows that, although few, women were present in the local administration of the Ancien Régime, particularly in the area of public supply, which was, in fact, the main concern of the municipal authorities. The abolition of public offices held by private persons and, above all, the extinction of the recourse to contractors, confined women in these institution to the humble functions of cleaning, water carriage and other similar tasks.
Keywords: Women; public offices; local government; women’s agency; 16th-19th centuries.

Authors: Correia, Ana Maria Diamantino
Abstract: Neste artigo pretende-se compreender
a epidemia de gripe pneumónica de
1918-1919 em Coimbra, a partir das
informações contidas nas páginas de
um periódico local. Por meio da análise
rigorosa e sistemática da Gazeta de
Coimbra consegue-se inferir a perceção
que uma burguesia urbana teve desta
catástrofe sanitária, considerada a maior
do século XX. Guiados pelo editor do
jornal, numa perspetiva não oficial dos
fatos, é possível vislumbrar as reações
às primeiras notícias da epidemia,
nomeadamente os temores da população
frente à informação veiculada, mas
também a resposta das autoridades e
da sociedade civil. Crítico em muitos
aspetos, censura abertamente a inércia
de várias instituições da cidade, como
a Câmara Municipal, a Faculdade
de Medicina da Universidade e a
Misericórdia.; This article investigates the 1918-1919 influenza epidemic in Coimbra using information found in the pages of a local newspaper. Rigorous and systematic analysis of the Gazeta de Coimbra reveals the urban bourgeoisie's perception of this health disaster, considered the most severe in the twentieth century. Guided by the newspaper's editor though an unofficial view of the facts, the reader can glimpse reactions to the first news of the epidemic, particularly the population's fears related to this information, but also the response from authorities and civil society. The newspaper is critical in many aspects, openly censuring inaction by several institutions of the city such as the city council, the medical school at the University of Coimbra, and the Misericórdia charitable institution.2018-01-01T00:00:00ZMujeres urbanas y trabajo autónomo en la Edad Moderna portuguesa (Coimbra, 1500-1834)

Abstract: This article analyses the economic activities developed by women in a Portuguese city, Coimbra, during the Early Modern Age, assessing their numerical significance, their protagonism and their decision-making capacity in the socioeconomic life of the city. Coimbra was then a medium-sized city, an episcopal and university seat; however, under this image of a traditional city, it had an intense economic activity that was managed and supervised by the City Hall, especially with regard to the daily supply of goods. After clarifying the legal status of Portuguese women in terms of property and work —which is still the subject of misunderstandings— it is emphasized that marital status was not a determining factor in the exercise of autonomous professions. Drawing on administrative sources and using a quantitative approach, the paper focuses on women who were self-employed rather than salaried workers. It establishes that women appear in multiple activities (about one hundred professions); that they were two-thirds of self-employed merchants, both in the mid-17th century and in the early 19th century; that most commercial activities were not segregated by gender, and men and women performed them in competition; that in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries women obtained examination charters and were integrated into the guilds of about ten trades, as the closure of guilds to women only occurred during the eighteenth century; and that, although economic activities were intensely regulated and supervised by municipal authorities, women often offered passive or active resistance to this regulation.2023-06-01T00:00:00ZA Olimpíada Nacional em História do Brasil: Socialização do conhecimento histórico por meio das Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação

temporal, relacionando-as com o pensamento historiográfico e a educação histórica.; The National Olympics in Brazilian History (ONHB) is a singular and successful

developed in the past few years in several countries, it engaged into the promotion
of systematic reflections on principles and strategies of History learning for
children, teenagers and adults. Making use of information and communication
technologies (ICT) for the creation of an interactive platform which promoted the
digital inclusion, besides enabling a number of activities that simulate the work of
a historian, the competition has become an important annual event, consolidated for
more than one decade. This paper aims to: provide an immersion in the operational
