Authors: Silva, Joana Brilhante de Oliveira Vicente
Abstract: The field of Geographies of Sexualities has been demonstrating for several decades how sexualities are shaped with and by places and spaces. Critical perspectives coming from scholars with work in Rural Queer Studies call attention to the need to decentralize academic knowledge - mainly focused on large, metropolitan cities -, and to engage with the valuable understandings and experiences that come from people who live in isolated, sparsely populated and rural communities. To understand how LGBTQ people’s Human Rights are experienced, and how legislative changes are promoted or resisted, we must have an extended comprehension of contemporary spatialities. As such, this thesis contributes to fill the gap of knowledge regarding the intersections between LGBTQ people’s experiences and the geographical condition of insular isolation, a perspective that has been insufficiently explored in LGBTQ scholarship.
This investigation comprises a multi-methods qualitative and interdisciplinary approach, making use of a case study, the Autonomous Region of Azores. The methodology encompassed online data collection, participant observation, documental analysis and 25 semi-structured interviews. The interviews were conducted with 21 LGBTQ adults (ages 18 - 70) and 4 key informants, all of whom were Azorean-born or living on the islands.
In registering the experiences of queer people who live in a very particular geographical setting, this thesis adds new information to the national and international body of LGBTQ research. The islands studied breed an intimate and partly closed sociocultural ecosystem. Roughly shaped by its isolation, smallness and the fact that the islands are sparsely populated, these “sociocultural greenhouses” shape the experiences of the local LGBTQ people. The thematic threads around aspects such as Social Contract, Mobility, Space and Exposure, allowed reflections on the importance of categories like family and society, shedding light on the significance of the respect of the local social and cultural norms, which I call during this work, the maintenance of the sociocultural homeostasis. Grounded on these thematic lines, the theoretical work led to the development of the concept of the Insular Effect. The Insular Effect results from the intimate, sociocultural ecosystem which is sustained by the islands' geographical isolation. Therefore, when looking at spaces with these conditions through the lens of LGBTQ studies, it is important to consider three main axes: the insular space, the feelings of exposure and the importance of the dominant social codes. These three axes create the insular effect that rebounds into the local LGBTQ community isolating the subjects. The ways in which this isolation was expressed in the case study were: leaving the islands; the invisibility of the subjects by the compliance with the sociocultural homeostasis; or the isolation that results from an exposure which is not desirable to the other LGBTQ locals. This exposure comes from the over conspicuousness of being openly gender and/or sexually diverse in spaces and places that are tailored by cis-heteronormativity.
This effect seems to be activated by an insular sense of place, which is highly marked by the feeling of proximity with all the members of the community as if the people’s quotidian is surrounded by “intimate strangers”. Although this seems to be a collective experience in all of the insular community, its impact is different on cis-heteronormative people, when compared to LGBTQ people.
Finally, another contribution of this work, which is based on the analysis of the data in light of an interdisciplinary body of knowledge, is the development of a five-point theoretical approach to LGBTQ studies in insular communities. Hopefully, this scientific endeavour offers an informed conceptual analysis of significant aspects to take into account when variables such as geographical isolation and LGBTQ people intersect.
The empirical data collected sheds light on the role of the geographical context in shaping LGBTQ people’s experiences. With the highlight of the important aspects that emerged in the analysis of this case study, the grammar of LGBTQ people’s Human Rights has been extended, allowing new perspectives towards future interventions that are compromised with the respect for human dignity, respect and freedom.; Há várias décadas que na área da Geografia das Sexualidades se tem vindo a demonstrar como as sexualidades são moldadas pelo e através do espaço.
numa cultura secular e global.
enquadra tais transformações numa temporalidade pós-feminista marcada pelos
ampliação do antifeminismo no discurso brasileiro.
religião em tal contexto.; This thesis is situated in the wake of studies that have questioned how mediatization can
contribute to the emergence of communicative spaces in which groups of women can negotiate
the meanings of their religious identities in a secular and global culture. Conceptualizing
mediatization as a contextualized articulation between social practices and the media
environment, the research takes the changes in the Brazilian religious field related to this
phenomenon as a core to ground the communicative practices of women in positions of
authority and visibility in the mediatized ecosystem of the Godllywood Project Movement,
which is part of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG). From an epistemological
and methodological perspective of Feminist Studies, the research frames such transformations
within a post-feminist temporality marked by the phenomena of neoliberalization and
hypervisibility of feminisms, as well as the amplification of antifeminism in Brazilian discourse.
Central to this proposal is the general hypothesis that the Godllywood ecosystem represents an
ambivalent and strategic "middle region" that has the potential to transgress and reinforce the
status quo — i.e., a space with political meaning and function, characterized by the union of
secular-religious and public-private dichotomies, in which a group of women act as mediamessages.
Aiming to analyze these ambivalences, the method of discourse analysis as used by
Rosalind Gill is adopted with the purpose of identifying the themes and linguistic strategies
mobilized in the Godllywood media ecosystem in the light of the literature on women in
Pentecostalism, the ecclesiastical organization and the IURD worldview, as well as the disputes
over the sense of femininity in Brazil in the last decade. Qualitatively, this analysis identifies
three interpretive repertoires related to the dynamics of advising and the post-feminist
discursive tendencies that characterize it, by examining a corpus composed of four contexts
within the Godllywood ecosystem. The repertoires highlight the tensions that permeate the
performance of the women’s groups around notions of female power, female subjectivity, and
femininity from the discursive construction of a post-feminist spiritual grammar. This
«grammar» allows the ecosystem to work as a space in which women deviate from and
reinforce traditional gender roles by playing a political and formative role before their female
audiences and thus disseminating the ideology of the UCKG in public discourse. These findings
highlight the importance of Godllywood in times of neoconservatism and shed light for future
research on its possible contributions to the study of antifeminism in Brazil, as well as for the
development of new research within the framework of studies on mediatization, gender, and
religion in this context.2023-06-01T00:00:00ZPráticas de democracia participativa no parlamentoDias, Wladimir Rodrigueshttps://hdl.handle.net/10316/1051752023-02-07T11:20:30Z2022-11-03T00:00:00ZTitle: Práticas de democracia participativa no parlamento

Percebeu-se, enfim, que a experiência investigada padece de ambiguidades insanáveis, se mantida a situação atualmente vista, tendendo a se manter um equilíbrio reciprocamente complacente entre espaços participativos e regalias da representação.; This research concerns the democratic issue, through the study of the interlocution experience with society over participatory institutional innovations performed by the Assembleia Legislativa do Estado de Minas Gerais since the 1990s. It aims at verifying the specificities of such practices, emphasizing the capacity for democratic deepening demonstrated by the actions taken, having as its core the effectiveness of social inclusion and empowerment achieved. The investigation had as epistemological basis the philosophical pragmatism, in Richard Rorty's version, associated with the systemic constructivism developed by Niklas Luhmann and with critical sociology, especially as shown in the work of Boaventura de Sousa Santos. It also followed the paths of democratic theory, joining perspectives that share the ambition to go beyond the limits found in the theoretical approach linked with liberal tradition, whether restrictive in nature or in the limits of pluralism. This was apprehended within the systems theory, under whose interpretive basis was developed an understanding of the phenomenon researched. Over almost thirty years, there was verified significant investment by the Assembleia de Minas Gerais in the adoption of participatory practices, inside an internal context of bureaucratic modernization and changes in the body of representatives, and an external context of redemocratization and constitutionalization in Brazil. It gradually established a set of modalities for society's participation in the activities proposed by the parliament in question, which are characterized by a diversity of formulas, audiences and results. Also, it was observed the expenditure of enough resources for these actions, and that the products obtained were of little value when compared to the achievable totals, especially regarding the inclusion of popular proposals in government planning, allocation of resources in the public budget, normative production, definition of public policies and inspection interventions and controls on the public sector. Furthermore, despite the number of events held and dialogue channels made available, it was noted that the scope of participation was restricted to information, comments, debates, suggestions and proposals, with the decision-making process remaining concentrated in the hands of the representation. Besides, it was verified that although the deputies did not oppose the introduction of participatory practices in the ALMG, their standard attitude towards them was that of indifference added to the reservation of their decision-making powers. Along with the modernizing processes assimilated by the Legislative House, it was also noticed that parliamentary behavior remained mostly bounded to Minas Gerais politics traditions, such as clientelism and patronage, which have been reinforced by a macrostructural constitutional framework of the political system, especially the separation of powers and the personalist electoral system. Overtime, a process of growth of participatory activities in the Legislative of Minas Gerais was simultaneously identified with a rearrangement of positions within that entity, safeguarding representatives' electoral interests. Among the most visible results, there is the restriction of participation by keeping decisions under parliamentary control, eventually configuring tokenism. Thus, it was noticed that the current situation of the investigated experience suffers from unsolvable ambiguities, tending to maintain a reciprocally complacent balance between participatory spaces and perks of representation.

There is today an ongoing shift in Family Law in which the stability of the institution is losing precedence over the superior interests of the individuals, namely in favour of their intersubjective relationships and the fundamental rights of each of its members, including most importantly those concerning minors. Indeed, the affective dimension has seized an unprecedented standing in judicial settings, in recognition that its disregard fundamentally negates the bonds that pre-exist within a family.
In view of joint custody, that is, the shared right to exercise parental responsibilities, being proposed by the legislator of the 2008 Reform (Decree-law no. 61/2008, of October 31, published in the Official Gazette of the Portuguese Republic) as the default model of child custody, and considering its current subdivision in two dominant forms of implementation, joint legal custody and joint physical custody, a case is made here in favor of the latter being established as the preferred choice, independently of whether an agreement between both parents can be reached, except when deemed harmful to the best interests of the minor(s), since it permits the continued exercise of positive parenting and safeguards the youth-parent affective bond.
Any judicial construct arising from the legitimate right of the spouses to file for divorce that opens the possibility of severing the emotional bond with their minor children, and the consequent exclusion of the non-resident parent from maintaining an active role in their education, against his/her will, is deemed contrary to the constitutional provisions that guarantee equal rights in marriage to both spouses as well as to both parents in the upbringing of their progeny, at heart asserting all parties to be inseparable and inextricably intertwined.
This shared exercise of parental responsibilities implicitly holds the idea of preserving the myth of a united family, in an attempt to ease the transition to the new reality as a «parental couple» that comes to exist in lieu of the «marital couple». This concept overcomes a previously embedded belief in society that saw in marriage an indissoluble contract and finds support in the biological bond, which constitutes the last remnant of a united family, still to this day the basic structural cell of our culture.
While parenthood cannot be solely underpinned by the biological context when responsibility and interpersonal criteria are not equally upheld, it is notoriously difficult to surpass entirely all biological biases, namely the underlying man-woman complementarity or, at least, the binomial bond of a two-party relationship, in light of an adequate exercise of parental duties.
