Biography
I am currently a Doctorate researcher at the Coimbra Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research (CIBIT), ICNAS, and Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra. I have a degree in Psychology, with specialization in Psychological Assessment, Counselling, and Rehabilitation. The final year concerned experimental studies in the field of Neuropsychology, in the topics of explicit and implicit memory, with healthy participants and patients (Parkinson's disease; and a patient with fornix damage due to tumour resection). My PhD was done in the field of Health Sciences - Biomedical Sciences. The thesis concerned studies in basic neuroscience in the field of visual and emotional processing of threatening information in healthy participants. It involved the acquisition and analysis of behavioural, skin conductance, and functional magnetic resonance imaging data to disentangle the neural correlates of emotional signals processing, e.g. biologically relevant faces and shapes (snakes), when visual attention and awareness mechanisms are constrained. As a postdoctoral researcher in CIBIT (ICNAS) and in the Faculty of Medicine, UC, my work is focused in the interconnected fields of experimental psychology, cognitive and affective neuroscience, particularly in the areas of social cognition, decision-making, reward and learning, using behavioural, psychophysiological (SCR) and brain imaging measures (fMRI and fNIRS). My scientific interests concern decision-making in the context of social interactions, using social dilemmas and neuroeconomic paradigms; reinforcement learning through reward and punishment mechanisms; and more broadly the impact of affective and cognitive processes in health and disease. Finally, I am also concerned with research integrity issues which affect the quality of research, its outputs and reproducibility. Therefore, I am embracing initiatives such as Open Science and FAIR data as tools for better science and to improve research assessment. At a broader level, I have been involved in local initiatives such as the PostDocs@UC and in national and international associations such as the Portuguese Association of Grant holders (ABIC) and the European Council of Junior and Early Career Researchers (EuroDoc), to improve scientific practices and employment conditions for researchers, locally, nationally and across Europe.
