Biography
Carlos Cordeiro is a specialist in Pulmonology since 1992 and a Senior Consultant of Pneumology since 2018. He has been the head of the Department of Pulmonology in Coimbra University Hospital (CHUC), since 2016. He has a PhD in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (FMUC) since 1996 and has been a Full Professor of Pulmonology in FMUC since 2016 and the Chair of the Curricular Unit of Thoracic and Vascular Pathology since 2018. Since 2011 he is the Chair of the Pneumology Clinic in FMUC and since 2014 he is the Coordinator for the Research Strategic Area “Environment, Genetics and Oncobiology” in UC. From 2019 to the present date he is the Dean, of FMUC. He is a Visitant Professor, University of Siena, Italy and University of Salamanca, Spain. He was President of Pulmonology Portuguese National Board, 2006/2009 and President of Portuguese Society of Pulmonology, 2010/2015. He has been a member of the ERS (European Respiratory Society) College of Experts, since 2014, a member of the ERS Evaluation Committee since 2015 and was a member of the ERS Council 2008/2012. He was elected ERS Secretary General 2016/2019 and has been elected for the ERS Presidential cycle: Vice-President 2020/2021, President-elected 2021/2022, President 2022/2023, Past-President 2023/2024. He was a member of the WASOG (World Association of Sarcoidosis and Other Granulomatous Disorders) Executive Committee, 2011/2016. He has been the principal Investigator and co-Investigator in several national and international funded projects, the most recent started in 2020: EIT Health project, SmashMedicine (cooperation with Universities of Oxford, Barcelona, Grenoble and Sorbonne). He has participated in several national and international Task Forces and European research networks in respiratory medicine. He has been the principal Investigator and co-investigator in several clinical trials, the most recent as PI: MA39189: Multicenter, International, Double-blind, Two-Arm, Randomized, Placebo-controlled Phase II Trial of Pirfenidone in Patients With Unclassifiable Progressive Fibrosing ILD. He has Implemented a Lung Cancer Screening Pilot Project in Portugal, using a low dose CT scan in former workers in the uranium mines in Portugal. He is a peer reviewer of several journals: Pulmonology, Acta Médica, European Respiratory Journal, Respiration, Respiratory Medicine, Journal of Internal Medicine, Breathe, Monaldi Archives for Chest Disease, Pulmonary Medicine, Pneumon, Journal of Medical Case Reports, Respiratory Research, Orphanet Journal of Rare Diseases, Clinical Respiratory Journal, Archivos de Bronconeumologia, Chronic Respiratory Disease. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the European Respiratory Monograph, European Respiratory Review, Journal of Respiratory News, Pneumon, Pulmonology, Revista de Medicina Desportiva, Revista Brasileira de Cancerologia, Thorax (portuguese version). He has participated in 24 Juries of Academic PhDs, 4 of Academic Aggregations, 165 of Academic Masters. He has orientated 5 PhD thesis and co-orientated 4. He has 154 publications as first author and 310 as co-author; 139 with IF, 4397 citations, H index 23. He has done 274 Personal presentations and 268 co-presentations. He has organized 78 training courses and has collaborated in the organization of numerous programmes. He set up the Portuguese Language Respiratory Association, a partnership between SPP, ERS, SBPT and ALAT, to promote respiratory health within Portuguese language territories. He has been a Pneumology Expert for Administration of the Centre Health System (ACSS) and for the Medical-Legal Board of the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences of Ministry of Justice He has been a member of the Portuguese Academy of Medicine, since 2006, Academic Holder since 2017 and Member of the installation committee of the Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing (MIA - Portugal) since 2020. He has received several awards.
