Biography
Aristides M. Machado Rodrigues (AMR) is a member of the Research Centre for Anthropology and Health. His main research interests are in the public health sciences, and biological anthropology with a particular focus on pediatric obesity, cardiorespiratory fitness and behavioural medicine (i.e. active lifestyles, nutritional habits, impact of sedentary time on metabolic health, and so on). Machado-Rodrigues qualified in Physical Education and Sport Sciences at the University of Coimbra in a 5-year diploma, and he has an MSc in Motor Development from the same University. During his PhD on Physical Activity and Health, which was finished in a pre-Bologna standard, he was collaborating with researchers from the School for Health at the University of Bath [United Kingdom] and the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Groningen [The Netherlands]. He has developed his research activity with close participation of members of the Tarleton State University [Texas, USA], Michigan State University [USA], University of Bath [England], Londrina State University [Brazil] and the University of Saskatchewan [Canada], among others. Machado-Rodrigues has published several scientific articles, particularly in peer-reviewed journals with impact factor such as Lancet, Preventive Medicine, BMC Public Health, American Journal of Human Biology, Journal of Sport Sciences, Annals of Human Biology, Journal of Physical Activity and Health, Pediatric Exercise Science, International Journal of Public Health, PlosOne, Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports or Health Promotion International journal (Oxford University Press), among others. In addition, Machado-Rodrigues has supervised several master and PhD students at the University of Coimbra, and he has been invited for several lectures in post-graduate programs at the same University [eg. PhD in Sport Sciences ¿ Physical activity and Health issues; Master in Leisure and Local Development; Master in Organized Sport for Children and Youth¸ Master in Leisure and Local Development¸ Master in physical activity and Public Health and Master of Physical Activity and Pedagogy]. He has been also acting as invited reviewer in about 200 papers in international journals with impact factor such as Preventive Medicine, BMC Public Health, Annals of Human Biology, BMC Pediatrics, Annals of Human Biology, European Journal of Sport Sciences, the International Journal of Public Health, BMJ Open, Annals of Medicine, British Journal of Sport Medicine, PlosOne, among others. As result of his intense research activity, AMR reached more than 100 publications in peer review journals with an accumulated Impact Factor (IF) of about 335.75 (87 papers in full manuscript with a partial IF=231.18, and about 106 publications in short-report/abstract with an additional IF of 104.57). It should be also highlighted his huge participation and presentations of his research work (more than 100 presentations in congresses) on major annual scientific meetings. Finally, his high-level and novel research has been clearly recognized by several national and international organizations/congresses during the last consecutive years. In 2014, 2013, and 2012, AMR was awarded by the Portuguese Society for the study of Obesity with the best communications and research on Paediatric Obesity. In 2017, he was also awarded by the Fundação Portuguesa de Cardiology (annual meeting). Cumulatively, his research merit has been also recognised by international agencies/scientific events such as the European prize by the Atomium Culture, the best scientific communication in the 29th annual meeting of the Pediatric Obesity Group (Poland, 2019), among others.
